STARK RAVING MAD

  • Bruce Bartlett, The Wall Street Journal, September 14, 1994, p A18 cites U.S. Commerce Department reports that "pollution abatement and control expenditures consumed more than 18% of gross private domestic nonresidential investment in 1992, or $102 billion. Over the past 20 years, U.S. businesses have been forced to divert almost 15% of their total fixed investment to nonproductive environmental equipment. The total adds up to more than $1.2 trillion.''
  • The 46th question on a questionnaire administered to United States Marines at a military base in California reads: "The U.S. government declares a ban on the possession, sale, transportation and transfer of all non-sporting firearms. A thirty (30) day amnesty period is permitted for these firearms to be turned over to the local authorities. At the end of this period, a number of citizen groups refuse to turn over their firearms. Consider the following statement: 'I would fire upon U.S. citizens who refuse or resist confiscation of firearms banned by the U.S. government.' [multiple choice:] Strongly Disagree, Disagree, Agree, Strongly Agree, No Opinion.''
  • " Call the Hotline. If you suspect or witness unlawful refrigerant releases, you can file a report easily and anonymously by calling the Stratospheric Ozone Information Hotline at 800 296-1996.'' Advises the EPA booklet "A Checklist for Citizen Action'' - EPA publication 430-F-93-006. We await the next Marine questionnaire.
  • "We have to tell our children that they must redefine their relationship to the sky, and they must begin to think of the sky as a threatening part of their environment'' - Senator Albert Gore, February 6, 1992, in a speech before Congress, as quoted in the environmentalist magazine, Garbage, October 1993.
