  • "The Dark Fiber Paradigm" in the Gilder Technology Report 2, No. 2, pp l-8, February 1997. Over 6 million miles of fiber optics are now being installed each year in North America. Gilder reports that, with new technology, it will be possible for each fiber thread to carry 25 times more than last year's average traffic load on all worldwide communication networks put together. He calculates that the information transfer capacity of a fiber optic thread is at least 1,000 times that of air and describes new non-electronic optical amplifiers that allow uninterrupted fiber transmissions. overall, he makes a compelling case for his prediction that data transmission will soon become almost instantaneous and virtually free.
