SAFETY FIRST

Just as the American people were beginning to relax with the reassurance that their government is dealing swiftly with the threat of carbon dioxide and that a phase-out of this dangerous substance will soon be underway, a more serious and fundamental risk has emerged. S. Honda and M. Matsuo, mechanisms of Ageing and Development 63 p. 235 (1992) have reported that the lifespan of nematodes is decreased by increases in the OXYGEN in their environment.

If this experiment had been done on people, these results would not be nearly so alarming. Nematodes, however, are animals—small worms that live in the earth. They are among those living things that cannot speak for themselves. They are clearly endangered by this threat. As a stopgap measure, we recommend digging up the world's nematodes and moving them to higher altitudes. Then we can tackle the long range problem of reducing planetary oxygen.
