The first symposium on Low Pollution Power Systems Development, sponsored by the US EPA, was held in Ann Arbor, Mich., October 14 19. Attended mainly by representatives of the auto industry, including several from Britain, Germany, Holland, Sweden, and other countries, the symposium offered some 50 papers on Stirling engines, gas turbines Rankine systems, electric cars, alternative fuels, rotary and stratified charge engines, and a number of general topics.
Of particular interest was a display of hardware, including a driveable gas turbine vehicle developed by Chrysler Corporation, a rideable Lear Bus, developed by the Lear Co. and powered by a steam turbine, a driveable gas turbine car developed by the EPA, and driveable models of all electric and hybrid electric ICE vehicles developed by General Motors.
Mockup and static exhibits included a Chrysler Cricket with a stratified charge engine, a postal vehicle with a stratified charge engine, and an impressive display of low pollution systems, components, and other hardware.
