If there were such a parameter as scientific achievement per capita, there is little doubt which country would be no. 1: Israel. The Weizmann Institute is among the world's very finest research centers. In elementary particle physics, cancer research, or almost any other branch of science, Israeli scientists are invariably in the front ranks. The country that made the desert bloom offered its Desert Research Institute, second to none in the world, to UNESC0, in addition to the large financial contributions it has been making to that organization.
UNESCO's answer: The Soviet/Third World voting block has expelled Israael from UNESCO's regional group, and has called on the director general to "withhold assistance from Israel in the fields of education, science and culture."
The major contribution to UNESCO, as to the UN in general, comes out of US taxpayers' pockets. But you need not passively watch US foreign non-policy and its cooperation with the UN hacks. If you are a scientist, artist or educator, you can urge your professional organization to boycott all projects involving UNESCO. But in any case, you can join America's foremost scientists, including 20 Nobel Prize winners, who themselves joined a worldwide call by 40 outstanding French intellectuals to boycott UNESCO.
