Access to Energy

WE ARE NOT ALONE

There was another event that was dutifully censored by Time and the other media that prefer to make the news to reporting it. A group of nationally known busines, labor, science and professional leaders organized a new body, Americans for Energy Independence, which is "dedicated to achieving a self-sufficient, prosperous and energy independent America."

Among the distinguished sponsors are two who are well known to our readers. Prof. Hans Bethe, Nobel laureate and one of the comparatively few scientists to speak out against the anti-nuclear witch hunt, is Chairman of the Board. Admiral E.R. Zumwalt, former Chief of Naval Operations and an outspoken opponent of US passivity in the face of the feverish Soviet naval build-up (AtE Oct.74), is President.

AEI plans to support intensive research and development of all sources of energy, to maintain liaison with federal, state and local energy administrations, and to develop public understanding of energy problems. Its national educational programs include publication of a regular newsletter and explanation of the complicated issues surrounding energy. In some respects, then, AEI is going to be a competitor of this newsletter, and all we can say is - Would that there were more! Welcome, friends.

For more information, write AEI, 1500 Wilson Blvd., Suite 1405, Arlington, VA 22209.

An organization that has done much work in demolishing environmentalist myths, particularly in the natural sciences, is the Council of Environmental Balance, Box 7732, Louisville, KY 40207, a nonprofit organization whose short publications are well worth reading.

Last month we published the addresses of Californian organizations combatting the phony arguments of the Nuclear Initiative. But you don't have to be a Californian to stand up to the superstition mongers, who are busy in your state, too. Would you collect signatures for a petition to federal and state legislators concerning viable energy supplies? Write for a form to Prof. R. Clack, Nuclear Engr. Dept., Kansas State Univ., Manhattan, KS 66502.
