YOUNG IS NOT STUPID

Sure, the young are gullible. Some are so keen on playing Robin Hood, they let themselves be hired for the role by the Sheriff of Nottingham. But have they all gone relevant, aware, and sensitive to legitimate aspirations?

No, sir You have read or seen The Incredible Bread Machine. (You haven't? Write World Research. Inc.. 11722 Sorrento Valley Rd., San Diego, CA 92112.) But that, of course, is general economics; when it comes to energy sources, do the young want anything but sunbeams, fumaroles, summer breezes or cow manure? How many advocates of nuclear power are there other than the buzzards so old they can remember when you had to work for a living?

Plenty. The work against the shutdown initiatives has shown how many young people still care and are willing to buck the fashionable tide. (And there would be more if they hadn't been brainwashed by some of the young radicals of 65 and over.) Three examples:

The Energy Research Groups Inc., is run by young nuclear engineers who do not live by government handouts like the sham foundations or by panhandling among the rich like the Union of Concerned "Scientists;" they make a living as energy consultants in the free market, and one of them, Dr. Ian Forbes, gave up a tenured university position to do the job. (They have just published a 2nd edition of their excellent The Nuclear Debate: A Call to Reason $2 from ERG, 1661 Worcester Rd., Framingham, MA 01701.)

Campus America is a group of seven young nuclear engineers who graduated from 1970 to 1975; they work full time at regular jobs for Westinghouse, but in their spare time they travel to college campuses to promulgate factual pro-nuclear information; they have a vicious way of keeping cool and confusing the critics with facts, thus gaining the unfair advantage of credibility. Energy Today and Tomorrow is a live theater show produced by and for young people, sponsored by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, and we do mean live! Explosions, flashing lights, billowing smoke, a generator powered by two members of the audience on a tandem bicycle ("for 10 minutes or until they pass out, whichever comes earlier"), working models from precipitators to solar panels. You see efficiency, pollution, conservation, and the rest of it, and you see the audience rolling with laughter. There are six parallel shows traveling the country, bringing highly entertaining education to schools, conventions and meetings. We saw the show in New Jersey; the instructor-comedian was C.V. Hill, and we can't believe the other 5 can all be as good, but if they are half as good, they are great. For more information on how to bring this show to your area, write Energy Education Office, ORAU, Box 117, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
