HATS OFF TO THESE TWO MEN

The anti-nuke demonstrations at several plants were a fizzle in everything except the usual oversized publicity. At Diablo, the NBC crews dutifully crowded round Ellsberg and Commoner, whose callous harangues were piped to the millions. What they didn't bring was the picture above: pro-nuclear counter-picket Dr. Thomas J. Connolly, Stanford professor of mechanical engineering. Last year, Connolly's eloquent testimony before the California State Legislature became a model for the defenders of public safety and energy abundance in the other states where the Luddites were trounced. "I think any time there is a mob action," said Connolly "it's good for people on the other side to come out and show just what' s going on. "And he could hardly have carried a better slogan. Unlike the anti-nukes, Connolly has no access to the lavish finances of the sham environmental organizations; like thousands of other genuine scientists, he opposes putting lust for political power above human lives. If there were more who have his guts, the Commoners and Ellsbergs would get the contempt they deserve.

Another man in the Diablo affair who has earned the esteem of decent people is San Luis Obispo Municipal Court Judge Warren Conklin, a judge who lives by the law, and not what fashionable ideology thinks the law ought to be. He divided the costs which the demonstrators had placed on the community (close to $19,000) by the number of arrested tresspassers and sentenced them to a fine of $500 each plus five days in the slammer." I have attempted to balance the factor of your civil disobedience with the economic burdens of your actions upon a society which does not and cannot condone such activity," he said before passing sentence. "Having been rejected at the polls, you turned to the regulatory process. Having enjoyed less than complete success in that process, you now turn to civil disobedience. I sincerely hope that none of you is prepared to take the next step to violent confrontation. . ."
