Spinoff 1977 is a colorful and impressive report by NASA on technology transfer to agriculture, medicine, safety, transportation, industrial productivity, and other fields, including energy and its safeguarding. The applications to medicine alone surely made the Mars probes worthwhile. Which sounds like an apology, and this magnificent booklet does have an air of apology about it. But while flame-resistant coatings may have been a spinoff from the space program, that program was itself a spinoff from the US defense effort. Both are now in decline, and both need support, not apology.
It its not that without the space program Americans would have no pocket calculators, but that without a strong defense they will not have a life worth living. (Overstatement? Read Prot. R. Pipes' "Why the Soviet Union thinks it can fight and win a nuclear war," Commentary July 1977.)
Spinoff 1977 ( 1 16 pp.) is $3 . 10 from Govt. Printing Off., Washington, DC 20402, stock no. 033-000-00671-3.
