APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY

Cecil de Mills was quite wrong about how the Egyptian pyramids were built - it would have taken 100,000 slaves to do it with roller sledges, and that kind of labor force was not available then.

J.D. Bush examines the question in the Oct. Nov. 1977 issue of the Calif. lnst. Technol. journal Engineering and Science (p. 23).

From the total energy required and his own experiments on friction encountered in rolling stone laden cradles, Bush finds that the construction method almost certainly involved parbuckles: Four wooden cradles (actually found by archeologists) were put round a stone block, and a sling was used to roll the cylinder up an inclined plane.

Construction workers please note, in case Lovinsian politicians succeed in stamping out electric power.
