Did you know Nader had another Critical Mass meeting in Washington? Probably not: All the stars of superstition, from Commoner to Caldicott, were there to engage in collective hysterics, but the press just yawned. Yes, we have lived to see the day: Nader and his media monkeys ignored by the media. After a flurry of pro nuclear articles (even in such former stalwarts as Time), the delegates, we are told by a participant, were in a morgue like mood; the leaders of this motley crowd quietly admitted defeat on the safety and environmental issues and planned to concentrate on nuclear economics with charges of "nuclear socialism Nader the capitalist crusader, we suspect, will be as credible as Bella Abzug in a Maybelline commercial.
SAFE (Society for the Advancement of Fission Energy, Box 353, Monroevilles PA 15146, with 1,000 members in 23 states), has created the "Blackout Brigade," to which it names politicians who have gone "that extra mile" to assure America of electric blackouts; the award is a black bulb with inscription "For pulling the plug on America," and the members so honored for 1978 are Gov. J. Brown, and Congressmen Ryan, Jeffords, Weaver, Ottinger and Carr. Local grassroots groups will attempt to present each award personally to the winner.
At the time members of the Boston Clamshell alliance were facing charges for criminal tresspass and disorderly conduct for using rope ladders to scale the fences of Seabrook, Massachusetts Attorney General F.X. Bellotti handed their organization, $8,661 out of the the $195,000 of federal funds he has to dispense fol "encouraging consumer groups to participate in electric regulatory proceedings." And more: The National Science Foundation is to be funded from your taxes to the tune of $10 million a year to support a Lovinsian nebula called "Appropriate Technology," including funding of social and political activist groups. The NSF is already spending $250,000 to solicit unrestricted public input to this humbug which is to begin in fiscal 1980. And to top it all we find the National Taxpayers Unions allegedly opposed to abuse of taxpayers' money, being exhibited at Critical Mass as Nader's conservative" showpiece and staunchly in his camp. If you were about to be duped into contributing to their "cause," consider giving the money directly to Mr. Bellotti's slush fund.
Among the most successful organizations defending nuclear power in the courts are Scientists and Engineers for Safe Energy Sources (SE), who cooperate with the National Legal Center for the Public Interest. The former at 410 Riverside Dr., Suite 82A, New York, NY 10025) are now seeking to expand their membership and chapters; they will also gratefully accept donations. The latter (at 1101 - 17th St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20036) will send a reprint of T. Bethell's article Exporting Pettifoggery" (AtE Nov. 78) for free, but will gladly accept donations, too.
"A Tale of Two Wastes'" by Prof. B.L. Cohen (AtE Nov. 78) has now been published in the Nov.78 issue of Commentary. Available at most libraries; too good to miss!
