THE NUCLEAR GROUNDSWELL

The anti-nuclear assault by the power-hungry intellectualoids in the media, in academia and in government is mounting with unprecedented fury; but at long last there seem to be some signs of a defense which has so far been sadly lacking. 400 participants of a pro-energy grassroots conference had been expected in Washington, D.C., in early February; more than 800 turned up, and not to impress the Sunday schools with more PR grins:

Margaret Bush Wilson of the NAACP, the organization that has put all of America's energy philosophers to shame (AtE Feb.78), made no bones about the choice between Carter's and Kennedy's energy policies: "A pox on both your houses!"

The Grass Roots Energy Alliance Team (GREAT) has begun publishing a monthly, GREAT News, to act as a clearing house of information to pro-energy groups (not individuals); it is funded by energy producers, users, business, labor and others according to clearly specified percentages that will not let any sector dominate. For information on how to affiliate, write GREAT, Box 50179, Washington, DC 20004. That is also the address for business to put its money where its mouth ought to be.

• Energy Examiner is a new monthly newsletter for energy advocates; first issue looks very good, and we heartily welcome the "competition" the more the merrier! $17/year from 398 National Press Bldg., Washington, DC 20045.

• A new national organizationAmericans for NuclearEnergy (AFNE) is being formed. It will instantly be recognized as a no-nonsense group, for it offers a subscription to AtE or a copy of The Health Hazards of Not Going Nuclear with membership. Write AFNE, Box 23834, Washington, DC 20024

National Review has published a special issue (2/2/79) on nuclear energy, including articles by B.Cohen, S.MeCraeken, B. Bruce-Briggs, and others. $2 from National Review, 150 E.35th St., New York, NY 10016.

•The American Nuclear Society intends to counter the well financed campaign against nuclear waste disposal on TV and radio, but it lacks the lavish funds of their opponents. Help them at 555 N.Kensington Ave., LaGrange Park, IL 6Q525.

• NLAS (Box 354, Murrysville, PA 15668) is the unabashed pro-nuclear lobby whose newsletter is available for a "subseription fee' of 2 letters to your congressman per month. They have been among the most successful defenders of nuclear power in Congress, but while Kendall has a lavish budget of several hundred thousand dollars a year to have his scare mongering sent out on slicks 4-color brochures, the NLAS newsletter is being published by volunteer work, stuffed, addressed, sealed and mailed by the wives and children of nuclear engineers. But they must still pay postage and printing costs, and they need help now. Please contribute at the above address.
