PERSONAL GLIMPSES

1) What you see on the right is taken from Izvestiya (30 Jul 80).

"Yelena [Helen] Kildikott" (it says when re-transliterated) received Izvestiya's correspondent in her Boston home to boast of the fan mail she gets as an antinuclear activist in her organization "Physicians for Social responsibility." Last spring she visited the USSR as a member of the US Peace Council, we read, evidently not breathing a word about Soviet power reactors running without containment buildings, but no doubt giving her usual performance on lethal radioactivity in the US.

"A well known scholar, expert on atomic radiation," says Izvestiya about Dr Yelena Kildikott.

Oh? For a moment there, we thought they were writing about Dr Helen Caldicott.

2) Suprisingly little¾no, unsurprisingly little, publicity was given to the trial of Washington State's former House Speaker J. Bagnariol, charged with accepting bribes from the Mafia (actually FBI agents). He tried to run against Gov. Dixy Lee Ray as an anti-nuke, talked into the FBI's Abscam-type hidden tape recorders, and caused much mirth in the courtroom when the tapes were replayed. Gov. Ray, he opined, was "probably" right in favoring massive nuclear power. "Publicly I am an antinuke," he said. "I don't mind prostituting myself a little bit. If I get elected governor, it will be on the nuke issue... You could probably drink the waste out of Three Mile Island, it's that harmless." (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 5 Aug 80.)

3) Abbie Hoffman, sought by the FBI as a bail-jumping drug pusher, turned himself in a few days ago. In his opus Steal This Book he had (apart from instructions how to produce home-made bombs or how to poison the air in banks with decaying fish) mainly concentrated on how to make a living by ripping off others, e.g. ripping off a restaurant for an expensive dinner for the price of a cup of coffee. But when things turned bleak and he had to make a living by ripping off others in earnest, which method did he choose? Why, the profitable life of a fulltime anti-nuclear activist. And New York's anti-nuclear governor Carey assured him of continuing assistance to his environmental committee (Gazette-Phone, Schenectady, 5 Sept. 80.)

4) Good news for astrologers and parapsychologists! If you are on our first-class mailing list you can still make it to Helena to share herbs, yoga and the holistic life with St. Amory (High Country News, Lander, Wyo., 16 May 80). If you have not yet sent $3 and are still on second class mail, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (1981, we hope)!
