SEA OF PEACE

We follow Oberg's scoop with a subject that is unusual for this newsletter, but we bring it because it has not drawn any attention in spite of its significance. It concerns the Soviet submarine carrying some nuclear weapon that ran aground in Swedish waters near that country's principal naval base last year.

A German periodical published in Canada, Kanada Kurier, claims to know of secret information that caused a number of concerned meetings in Washington and NATO headquarters in Europe. What impresses us in this unconfirmed report from an obscure source are two points that went unnoted by the press:

1) If the sub was spying, as usually assumed, why would it grossly increase its risks by taking a nuclear torpedo or missile along for such a mission?

2) The sub was of the "Whiskey" (U-137) class; and according to the prestigious London Institute of Strategic Studies it is not fast enough to get out of the danger zone after firing a nuclear torpedo. Strategic missiles, on the other hand, are carried by very much larger Soviet subs, of which there are six in the Baltic, their weapons aimed at European cities (whose inhabitants have taken to the streets to protest the US nuclear threat).

Kurier claims to have teamed the answer: the sub is one laying nuclear mines that have a life of about 8 years and can be ignited by remote radio control. They can be laid near Western ports or used to destroy the NATO barrier planned in the event of war to prevent the strong Soviet Baltic fleet sailing into the North Sea.

The Soviets have called on all concerned countries to make the Baltic "A Sea of Peace."
