ABOLISHING ELITISM

One more comment on the acid rain issue. We believe it is one that should be studied in scientific laboratories and observatories, not in the lobbies of Congress.

But that, goes the objection, is elitism and runs counter to participatory democracy.

All right then, let's not argue form of government, but just plain consistency. What is so different about acid rain and appendicitis? If, as a participatory democrat, you need your appendix taken out, who else should do it but the elected representatives of the people?

You know how to handle a scalpel, don't you, Congressman? And please don't cut so deep, Senator¾with the salary you are drawing, we can't afford a new operating table every week...
