GOOD READING

1) Supertops: The Coercive Utopians by Rael Jean and Erich with the full low-down on the low-downs¾sham-environmentalists, antinukes, energy-stiflers, the WCC and NCC ("The Sword is My Shepherd") and other "social deception by America's power players." Go from bookstore to bookstore to make them get it; then order it at a discount ($16.45 ppd) from AIM, Box 28390, Washington, DC 20005.

2) Radioactive Wastes and the Ocean (vol.3 of Wastes in the Ocean, Wiley, N.Y. 1983) contains Chapter 19, "Nuclear War and the Ocean" by C.L. Osterberg. That is how a genuine scientist estimates the possible effects of nuclear war. Note, in parar, sec. 19.5.4 (pp.456-8), "Dust and Smoke."

3) Wm. Tucker, "No one killed Karen Silkwood," Playboy, Nov. 83.

4) M. Kaku, J. Trainer, Nuclear Power. Both Sides (W.W. Norton, $14.95), is poor, despite good articles by B.L. Cohen, B. Wolfe and A. Brodsky. The two sides could not read each other's articles, enabling outrageously false antinuclear statements to appear unanswerable or unanswered; but above all, the pronuclear case for safety is made with disgusting feebleness. The outstanding advantage of nuclear power over present power sources, public health, is not mentioned; instead, the book brings a cartoon showing a board meeting of "Outright Nuclear, Inc." with a member proposing "First we have to convince people that good health isn't everything." Far more interesting is the fact that one of the two editors, Jennifer Trainer, started out anti-nuclear and (like journalist-author Jacque Srouji [Jun 77]) on studying the subject became pro-nuclear. A reprint of Cohen's essay on radiation is available to AtE subscribers from her for $1 at 234 E.53rd St., New York, NY 10022.
