1) The Robber Barons of the Poor? (Essays by Sen. Hatch, Sen. Denton, Rael Jean Isaac, and others) is an excellent 133-page expose of political lobbying at taxpayers' expense by the Legal Services Corporation. Depriving citizens (and especially the poor) of justice is done by the same methods of smearing, misinforming, intimidating and hype
¾all with the full support of the media¾as is done when depriving them of energy. When the fraud was exposed and about to be dismantled, the LSC went to war to demonstrate where the real power is; a gigantic lobbying campaign was kicked off with the LSC's genteel Jeanne Connolly announcing "The Congress is not going to think that the whole world is pissed off at Legal Services...." (she has since moved, together with her sensitive femininity, to the staff of the Honorable Metzenbaum). Free from Washington Legal Foundation, 1705 N St. N.W., Washington, DC 20036.2) Regulatory Reform ed. M.N. Maxey, R.L. Kuhn (237 pp., hdbd., Praeger, 1985; $37.95) differs markedly from legal and political books with that type of title in that virtually all contributions (by well-known writers like Weidenbaum, Wm. Tucker, Eisenbud, Zebroski), fall in areas of interest of this newsletter
¾energy, science, health, risk assessment, and free-market economics. The star contribution, in my view, is Julian Simon's essay on the proper roles of public and private sectors in resources and population, as usual packed with fascinating graphs and data, and void of any hot air. Highly recommended in spite of its steep price (make your public library buy it).3) Irradiated Foods and Antibiotics in Animal Feed were excellent when first published by the American Council on Science and Health, and are now even better in their second (1985) editions. $2 each from ACSH, 47 Maple St., Summit, NJ 07901.
4) On the second anniversary of the Korean airliner KAL-007 massacre, the Reagan administration is considering renewed landing rights for Aeroflot in the US (time heals all crimes). James Oberg has an outstanding review of the literature on the massacre in the October American Spectator. Soviet disinformation on KAL-007's "spy mission" is still being published, usually referring to the article in the Defence Attache, which was technically in error and assumed physical impossibilities [AtE Aug 84]; also often quoted is an article embellished by even more, grade-school bloopers by one David Pearson in the ever dutiful Nation, Aug. 1984. What continues to be kept a strict secret by the US press and networks is that the Defence Attache had to repudiate its original article and to pay damages for libel to KAL; it also published Oberg's refutation [AtE May 85]. The literature on the subject includes a book put out by Novosti Publishers (Moscow): The President's Crime: The Provocation with the South Korean Airliner Carried Out by Order of Reagan.
5) Reprints of brief articles Pesticides by R. Arnold and The Tragedy of DDT by Prof. T.H. Jukes available free (contribution welcome) from NCEB, Box 7732, Louisville, KY 40-207.
6) "McNamara and Bethe: Weapons and Faith," Contentions Sept. 85, is Midge Decter's refutation
¾in clean, beautiful logic¾of the theory, promoted by these two (and Gorbachev), that Star Shields are a threat to peace. Free (contrib. welcome) from Committee f. t. Free World, 211 E.51 St., New York, NY 10022.7) More articles on medical/defense issues for a SASE from Jane Orient, M.D., 1601 N. Tucson Blvd/#9, Tucson, AR 85716. Also a video tape (1/2 inch VHS) on a debate of physicians, Star Shields vs. MAD strategy ($20).
8) "Acid rain: crisis or hype?" and other articles are contained in the July 1985 Contact, a monthly published by the Wisconsin Public Service Co. (Publ. Info., Box 700, Green Bay, Wl 54305). Includes comments on difference between Wisc. and German forests.
