1) The November issue of Reason ($2, or $24/year, Box 40105, Santa Barbara, CA 93140) has a nauseating cover: the face of Jeremy Rifkin, witch-hunter-in-chief of genetic engineering. But the question: Will the future survive him?
2) Oceanographer Dr. Charles Osterberg's "Nuclear Power Wastes in the Ocean? (Chapt. 4 of Energy Wastes in the Ocean, Wiley, 1985) is a most informative paper. See also his popular article "Rubbish on the High Seas," Newsweek, Oct. 7, 1985.
3) Century 21: Discovering the New America is a video-tape issued by the San Francisco Bay Area Engineering Council and aimed at high school teachers and students to counter anti-technology attitudes. VHS or Beta, $14 from Davkore Co., Attn. D. Lewis, 1300 D Space Prkwy., Mountain View, CA 94043.
4) "Countering Radon Menace..." by N. E. Hager, Wall St. J. 10/10, is a welcome ice-breaker, though it contains nothing that has not appeared in these pages over the last 5 years. "Synfuels Energy Dinosaur" by Energy Secretary John S. Herrington, WSJ 10/9 is an excellent piece on the immortal monster; were it not for the counterexample of George Neville Shultz (who makes the most wonderful speeches), I would say he must be one of the good guys.
