GOOD READING

1) Another superb article by Rael Jean Isaac: "Games Anti-Nukes Play," American Spectator, Nov. 85, reprinted by AIF, Publ. Dept., 7101 Wisconsin Ave., Bethesda, MD 20814. Here they are, the traveling allegers and phony whistle blowers whose false charges make the NRC launch long and expensive last-minute investigations in plant after plant, even if the charges are known to be irrelevant to safety. The GAP saboteurs hatched from the Institute of Policy Studies inflict billions of dollars in direct damages, not counting the cost to the economy through power shortages in years to come. In plants like Midland, Mich., these costs led to their cancellation, though the allegations were false. Anyone who fell for Forbe's feeble-minded analysis of what drove up the cost of nuclear plants should read this article, lest he be taken in by such shallow fluff again.

2) The first Accuracy in Academia Report [Ate Sep 85] is out! An antinuke brainwasher at Arizona State will not discuss his lectures in public: academic freedom means bullying only those who need you for grades. Get in on the first issue! ($15, or $30/year by first class, AIA, 1275 K St./# 1150, Washington, DC 20005.)

3) Three new booklets from the American Council on Science and Health:

Automobile Occupation Restraint Systems gives a very good technical discussion on seat belts vs. airbags; but the political implications presented are arguable. (If you don't buckle up, do you, risk inflicting something on yourself or on "society"?) Diet and Cancer clearly shows our ignorance on the subject, and Does Nature Know Best?

Natural carcinogens in American Food is a potent antidote to the panic-makers who weigh a danger not by its severity, but by its origin industry or nature. There is evidently only one perfect way to avoid cancer from your diet: die of starvation. But without swallowing: saliva contains carcinogenous nitrates. $2 each from ACSH, 47 Maple St., Summit, NJ 07901.

Understanding Nuclear Waste by D. R. Beeth and M. Andrews is an excellent 90-page introduction to the subject, free from Public Affairs, Houston L & P, Box 1700, Houston, TX 77001.
