F. Saghafian,
RRC, Tehran, Islamic Republ. of Iran
IN THE NAME OF OUR SUBSCRIPTION DEPT.
Dear Mr. Saghafian: 4 Nov. 1986
Unlike the Reagan administration, which has apparently been shipping arms to your country, we do not sell to government-sponsored institutions in states organizing terrorism. We would, however, refer you to Amory Lovins of the Rocky Mountain Institute in Snowmass, Colo., who will give you vast quantities of advice on how to harness cheap, renewable energy. We would dearly love to see the production and use of terrorist weapons, the transportation of terrorists, and the communication with their bases, run on sunshine, wind, chicken manure and other sources highly recommended by Mr. Lovins. Although they have proved utterly insignificant in American industry, who knows what they might do for a jihad by exploding paper bags in busy Paris streets or attacking airline passengers with renewable water pistols.
P.B.
2) Dear Petr: 25 Sept. 1986
... I enjoyed the fun you had with the radioactivity of Ted Kennedy and Markey [AtE Oct 86], but I have one small quibble. Potassium 40 and cesium 137 in humans concentrate in muscle, with very little in the fat, so even though Kennedy might be slightly more radioactive overall than Markey, because of the corpulence you refer to, he would contain less radioactivity per pound. On the other hand, since DDT and PCBs concentrate in fatty tissue, Kennedy could prove to be a treasure-trove for these organic pollutants...
Sincerely, Charles Osterberg,
Gaithersburg, Md.
Dear Charlie: 4 Nov. 1986
I am inclined to quibble back¾haven't you forgotten about the carbon 14 in Kennedy's senatorial seat and his other multiple layers of fat? However, regardless of whether he is more radioactive than the Hon. Markey, I will agree that chemically speaking, he is decidedly the more pesticidally pestilential.
Cordially, P.B.
