B.L. Cohen, "Reducing the hazards of nuclear power¾ Insanity in Action." Society spends $200,000 to save a life on the highways, $2,000,000,000 to save it from nuclear hazards. Free from USCEA, 1776 I St. NW/#400, Washington, DC 20006.

Ocean Incineration and Wastes in Marine Environments, both OTA reports (OTA-O-313, Aug.1986 and OTA-O-335, Apr. 1987, respectively, Govt. Printing Off., Washington, DC 20402); worth studying to judge the insanity of shipping 3,200 tons of garbage 6,000 miles back to N.Y. and burying it on land.

The Nuclear Waste Primer, $6.95, League of Women Voters, 1730 M St. NW, Wash., DC 20036. I ordered it to have some fun with the women's libbers superstitions; but there aren't any. A decent book, except that it studiously evades any comparison with wastes from fossil fired power. But then, so does the nuclear industry.

"Importing Electricity from Canada," questions and answers, free from USCEA (address above).

B.N. Ames & oth., "Ranking possible carcinogenic hazards," Science, 4/17/87; see also discussion, 9/11/87.

J. Tomkin, "Scientific American goes to Moscow," Chronicles (Rockford Inst., 934 N. Main St., Rockford, IL 61103), Sept. 1987. If you wondered about the anti-defense articles in almost every issue of the Sci. Amer., read how its publisher extols the Soviet Empire in an address accepting an honorary degree in Moscow.

Two Wall St. J. articles (ed. page) well worth a trip to the library: "Sierra Club show Hodel its true colors," 9/23/87, and "Bee-feces theory still has no sting," 9/17/87.

Like other bodies, the Penna. House of Repr. discussed a bill to divest in S. Africa. State Rep. Ron Gamble attached an amend-ment to divest in all countries that abused human rights. The amendment passed, and the bill was tabled. For a copy of his speech, send a SASE to Rep. R. Gamble, House Box 174, Main Capitol Bldg., Harrisburg, PA 17120.

[CARTOON with caption:]

"Well, gang¾the good news is our acid rain study found a viable, efficient, non-polluting alternative to the coal-fired plant. The bad news is it's nuclear power."
