THAT'S THE WAY

After charlatan Harvey Wasserman [AtE Dec 86] published one of his fables in something called the Utne Reader, scientists Sharon and Gerald Campbell of Woodside, N.Y., urged the publishers of the widely used Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature not to include the Utne R. in its guide. "While your index provides a wide variety of point of view," they write, "we cannot recall finding outright nonsense in sources you listed. We would be very disappointed if that changed.~

"A capitalist exploits 10 workers. After he fires 4 to starve in the street, how many are left to make profits for him?" That's how children learn arithmetic in the Soviet Empire. A similar method of brainwashing, though for a different purpose, is em-ployed by The Ecology Coloring Book for early grade classes: pictures of industry belching smoke, and captions "Laws must be made stricter and enforced to give us a cleaner earth¾govern-ments must give more money toward a cleaner world". I do not propose a "counter" coloring book for 8-year-olds, but for "that's the way," let me recommend (again?) a superb book for high school students, Visions of the Future (Intnl. Ctr. DTS, 5 Canal Rd., Pelham Manor, NY 10803), which provides genuine statis-tics of population, pollution, etc., to encourage discussion. ("Our goal is not to replace gloomy predictions with gloomy ones.") It is not at all below the dignity of adults.
