ProfScam by C.J. Sykes ($18.95 304 pp., hdbd., Regnery-Gateway, 1988) is a fairly good picture of today's university, though it presents the professoriat merely as incompetent, when in fact it is above all dedicated to its leftwing biases. Also, the description applies essentially to the humanities; the skill-teaching depart-ments such as medicine, sciences, and engineering have not yet degenerated that far. Nevertheless, the book is another good reason why to stop giving to the college of your choice.
S. Fred Singer, "Does the antarctic ozone hole have a future?" EOS, 12 Nov 1988, proposes that the antarctic ozone hole is not due to CFCs, but to cooling of the stratosphere as part of a general climatic fluctuation.
Transporting low-level radioactive waste and Decommissioning nuclear power plants, USCEA, 1776 I St. NW/#400, Washington, DC 20006.
P.C. Roberts, "Why did the quake take such a toll?" Wash. Times, 12/14/88; also available in Fort Freedom. (Armenia, with a weaker earthquake, had five times the casualties of Mexico City .)
The American Friends (Quakers) Service Committee, masquerading as a humanitarian organization, has been in the forefront of sabotaging both nuclear power and nuclear defense. It has also been a leading apologist for the world's most brutal tyrants, not excluding Pol Pot with a cool 1.5 million murders to his "credit," and it has been supportive of terrorist organizations such as the PLO and the ANC. I highly recommend Rael Jean Isaac's review of Peace and Revolution and her reply to a critic in Commentary, (Sept. 88, Jan 89, resp.). To which I would like to add a personal note: I met the Quaker pacifists in WWII, while I was on a Czechoslovak squadron in the British RAF. Though I disagreed with them, I could not help admiring them then, for while they refused to touch a weapon, they volunteered for such dangerous duties as mine sweeping and driving ambulances in battle. They had nothing in common with today's sleazy thugs who lie about non-violence and who have become agents of slavery and empire; indeed, to use the same name of "Friends" is an insult to those who, in their own non-violent way, fought the Nazis
¾the very evil of totalitarianism that the contemporary sham-Friends are supporting.Fort Freedom now has 513 members, of whom 199 are active. Drop in for some good reading!
If you are into classical music: I have written a computer pro-gram to identify some 800 classical themes, which a PC will whistle when you name composer, work, no. and movement (picked from menu). Conversely, playing the theme on the computer keyboard (which has been converted into a piano) will identify the composer and work. Write for flyer; AtE subscribers can take a 50% discount on first copy if ordered before April 15.
