LET ME DREAM

It is my belief that the computer and microprocessor will, in time, completely transform society: it is a landmark of the order of fire, agriculture, gun powder & printing-press, and the steam engine. Automation and computerization will so pervade produc-tion and services that menial work will disappear. But what will mainly disappear (and will eventually be considered immoral) is buying and selling a person's time, that is, the idea of employment. A person's rewards will be received for services performed, that is, by contract work only. This work will be done by computer in a high-tech cottage industry. Everybody will find his niche according to his competence. (The poor/lazy will starve; the poor/handi-capped will receive more charity than now, when it is collected by force and most of it ends up in a social-worker bureaucracy.) Government, the legal wielder of force, will govern by direct con-sent of the governed as a voluntary association limited to prevent-ing and countering the illegal force by criminal and aggressors, for they will not be able to collect a cent for the National Endowment of the Arts, let alone the Small Business Administration (the IRS today relies not so much on the threat of audits as on the threat that an accountant or other employee will give away tax evasion by his employer).

In this totally decentralized society, the only people who will need to travel will be maintenance men, firemen, ambulances, and other emergency services; and the only ones who will want to travel will be tourists, vacationers and (separated) lovers¾the only ones who need a sense of touch and smell in addition to sight and hear-ing. For if only image and sound are needed, the upcoming opti-cal fiber technology has a bandwidth that can easily take care of all conventions, business meetings, educational classes, judicial trials, choir practice, and all other non-personal contacts without the bother of airport and commuter crowds.

And so the super-jumbos will carry only vacationers and lovers; many of their seats will be left empty by the businessmen not going to Washington, and they will be paid for, symbolically speaking, by the money that used to be forcefully extracted to finance Piss-Christ.
