GOOD READING

Understanding Radioactive Waste by R.L. Murray (167 pp., sftbd., Battelle Press, 505 King Ave, Columbus OH 43201, $16 ppd.) is the 3rd revised and updated edition of the book [reviewed [AtE Sep 83]. This is a most excellent technical introduction for laymen to the disposal of all types of waste, including (new in 3rd edition) defense wastes, and is highly recommended. The only fault I can find with it is that it does not compare nuclear wastes to fossil-fired power wastes, which are 3.5 million times larger in volume, are partly disposed of in human lungs, shorten the lives of some 37,000 Americans per year, and are most unfortunately only slightly radioactive, so that they do not decay¾in fact after 500 years coal ash is more toxic than nuclear wastes from the same amount of electricity. That, however, is not meant as a discourage-meant to acquire this excellent book.

R.J. Bidinotto, "What is the truth about global warming?" Reader's Digest, Feb. 1990, 10 for $5 ppd., Reprints Editor, RD, Box 406, Pleasantville, NY 10570.

No, Forbes is not always sleazy (see "Flashes" above).

Among its rational articles are W.T. Brookes, "The global warm-ing panic," 12/25/89; R. Bailey, "The ozone hole that didn't eat the world," 10/30/89; P. Huher, "Electrophobia," 9/4/~9. Just ignore their anti- nuclear hysterics.

W.T. Brookes, "Will Senate declare war on family autos?" Human Events, 2/3/90; K. Jeffreys, "Pursue clean air through capitalism," Human Events, 2/10/90.

K.C. Barrons, "Organic farming¾the whole story," SASE to NCEB, Box 7732, Louisville, KY 40207.

'~Meeting the threat of ballistic missiles in the Third World" and "Brilliant Pebbles: revolutionary idea for strategic defense," Background papers 726 (9/21/89) and 748 (1/25/90), resp., Heritage Fndtn., 214 Mass. Ave. NE, Wash. DC 20002.

David Crockett (1786-1836), "Not yours to give," Grapevine Publ., Box 45057, Boise, ID 83711, $0.30ppd. Marvelous!
