E.L. Gershey (and three others from Rockefeller Univ.), "Low Level Radioactive Waste From Cradle to Grave" (hdbd., 212 pp., Van Nostrand Reinhold, N.Y. 1990, $36.95) most excellently fills an irksome gap. Easily understood by the layman and eminently suited to supply the facts for defeating the panic makers.
"Antiscience Trends in the USSR," Scientif. Amer., Aug. 91, by S. Kapitza, (presumably) son of famed Russian physicist Pyotr Kapitza. Debatable in places (he has been conned into taking Carl Sagan for a scientist), but highly stimulating. In places you wonder whether you are reading about the USSR or America.
V.I. Postrel, L. Scarlett: 'Talking about Trash," Reason, Aug./Sep. 91. How to solve the garbage "crisis." Reprints ($1?) K Teasley, Reason Foundtn., 2716 Ocean Park Blvd/#1062, Santa Monica, CA 90405.
NRC regulations are generally quite unreadable, but 10 CFR Part 20, "Standards for protection against radiation; final rule," 5/21/91, Part IV, pp. 23360-23474. has a useful appendix of permis-sible limits for all elements and their isotopes.
E.M. Whelan, "Cancer scares and our inverted Health
Priorities," Imprimis, Jun. 91, Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, MI 49242.
