IN MEMORIAM WARREN BROOKES

On New Year's Day, the greatest journalist of our time, Warren Brookes, died of pneumonia at age 62.

Originally trained as an economist, he was in the employ of large corporations for some 20 years, but left the world of business for journalism in 1975, at first writing mainly about the detrimental ef-fect of government regulation.

But he soon realized that the ultimate threat in that direction came from the sham-environmentalists and most often devoted his column, printed by 60 newspapers across the country, to unmask-ing the Green frauds and supplementing his column with numerous speeches and additional articles in Forbes and ap-pearances in 60 Minutes. He debunked acid rain, global warming and many other scams, and dug up the names of the corporate wimps and leftist foundations who were pouring millions into the Green coffers.

He was an avid reader of AtE, and in turn his articles were often recommended in our "Good Reading" column and many are available in Fort Freedom.

It is typical for our times that politically correct dilettantes like Woodward and Bernstein get Pulitzer prizes for "investigative" reporting of leaks (from Deep Throat and others) handed to them on a silver platter, and that the electronic mass media brain-washers fall all over such fashionable scribblers; yet not one electronic mass media news program as much as mentioned Brookes' death.

His passing away leaves an acutely painful gap which just cannot be filled.

His wife Jane suggests that any donations in his memory be sent to the Competitive Enterprise Institute, 233 Penmsylvania Ave. SE/#200, Washington, DC 20003.
