GOOD READING

W. Rathje, C. Murphy, Rubbish! The Archaeology of Garbage (250 pp., hbd., Harper-Collins 1992; $23) is readable and often very revealing, but should be read with a grain of salt: the recycling recommendations, for example, are outdated (compare "Space available: Economics of trash shift as cities learn dumps aren't so full,þ WSJ, 6/2/92, p.1).

Issues in the Environment, ed. K. Napier, Amer. Council on

Sci. & Health (1995 Broadway, 2nd fl, New York, NY 10023), sftbd., 91 pp., no price given, is an excellent summary of cancer scares, alar, dioxin, asbestos, PCBs and other such subjects.[15.00]

I.M. Goklany, M.W. Sprague, "Sustaining development and biodiversity," Policy Analysis no. 175 (8/6/92), $4 from Cato Inst., 224 2nd St. SE, Washington, DC 20003.

"Notes from the Editor: Freon, ozone and UV," Amer. Phys. Soc. New England Section Newsletter, Prof. H.C. Hayden, Dpt. of Physics, Univ. Connecticut, Storrs, CT 06269. Also data and refer-ences. As fine a summary as you will get in a few pages free to AtE readers for a SASE (envelope for 8.5 x 11" pages, postage 98›).

Last time I highly recommended "The truth about America's Forests" ($2), but did not give the address: Evergreen, 4025 Crater Lake Hwy., Medford, OR 97504.
